From the massive 70 foot arches at both ends of this cave to the room sized boulders and impressive chandelier-like stalactites hanging from the cave’s ceiling, this cave astounds new explorers as it did myself. Standing in front of the cave, visitors are dwarfed by the expansiveness of the opening that beckons them forward. Located near Augustine, in Mountain Pine Ridge, it is a perfect cool-off spot for visitors coming back from Caracol Ruins.

パクビトゥンファーム周辺：リオフリオ洞窟

２０メートル以上有る高さの洞窟の天井からはシャンデリアの様な鍾乳石がぶら下がっていたり、部屋くらいあるサイズの岩とが印象的な大規模な洞窟です。洞窟の前に立ってみると、その洞窟の口の大きさに言葉を失います。思わず中に入ってみたくなる様なベリーズの石灰岩地層を自然のままを楽しめるスポットです。

マウンテンパインリッジ森林保護区内のオーガスティン村の近くに位置し、カラコル遺跡から戻って来る時の暑さをしのぐ寄り道に最適な場所です。

Activities around Pacbitun Farm: Caracol (a.k.a. Uxwitza)

Caracol ruin, located in the Chiquibul National Park boasts the largest standing Maya ruin in all of Belize. Caracol covered approximately 200 square kilometers, covering an area much larger than present-day Belize City (the largest metropolitan area in the country) and supported more than twice the modern city’s population.

The Caracol area was occupied as early as 1200 BC, yet occupation in the epicentral area was no earlier than 650 BC and lasted no later than AD 950. Excavations at Caracol have discovered 53 carved stone monuments (25 stelae and 28 altars), and more than 250 burials and 200 caches.

After a victory over Tikal in the 6th century, Caracol flourished and became one of the largest Maya cities. After its decline, the city lay hidden in thick, high-canopy jungle for centuries until a native logger came across the ruins in 1937.
