The Caracol area was occupied as early as 1200 BC, yet occupation in the epicentral area was no earlier than 650 BC and lasted no later than AD 950. Excavations at Caracol have discovered 53 carved stone monuments (25 stelae and 28 altars), and more than 250 burials and 200 caches.

After a victory over Tikal in the 6th century, Caracol flourished and became one of the largest Maya cities. After its decline, the city lay hidden in thick, high-canopy jungle for centuries until a native logger came across the ruins in 1937.
