At Barton Creek cave you can explore a primarily single-passage resurging stream, via canoe into a cave formerly used by the ancient Maya as a ceremonial site. Skulls, pottery and artifacts have been found indicating that this cave was used between the Early Classic (200 to 600 AD) to the Late Classic (600 to 900 AD) periods. The remains of at least 28 humans have been found within the cave. The high ceiling, beautiful rock flows and cathedral chambers makes this a beautiful place to photograph. The cave is adorned with stalactites and stalagmites. Mayan pottery shards and bones can be observed by the guide’s spotlights. En-route to the cave you will drive through the traditional Mennonite village of Upper Barton Creek.
